My Biggest Mindset Shift




Growing up I was always super athletic…. I was a dancer, a gymnast, an all-star cheerleader and I ran track in high school. You could throw me in any sport and I would pick it up quickly. But I wasn’t someone who did well with just being “ok” at the sport-I wanted to be the best at it. So, as you can imagine, when I found CrossFit I was instantly hooked.


Now, we all know that CrossFit is a sport that wants to constantly showcase your weaknesses. I quickly became obsessed with the idea of challenging myself to always be better than the day before. Up until a few months ago, I had never really thought much about what I put into my body. I always had an “athletic” body type; I just ate when I was hungry and figured I would “work it off anyway” so it didn’t matter. But after 4 years attempting to be a competitive CrossFit athlete, I felt like I was stuck. Not making any progress, not moving backwards, but not moving torwards where I wanted to be. Not only was my fitness not where I wanted it to be, but my body always felt beaten down. I consumed way more coffee than the average human should, and I had the mentality of “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” Somehow, even with all these terrible habits, I ended up making it to a CrossFit competition that I had always dreamed about competing at. This was when I realized I needed to make a change.


How could I spend hours in the gym every day, constantly working my weaknesses, when my biggest weaknesses weren’t in my movements-it was how I was taking care of my body. After finally getting to compete at the level I’d always dreamt about, but feeling like crap, I thought-“If I can be this good of an athlete without actually taking care of my body and fueling it properly, imagine how good I could be if I did?!”


So that’s my why. Sometimes it takes days, months, or even years to finally take a step back and say, “Am I really doing everything I can, to get myself closer to my goals?” I wasn’t, and that’s ok, because once I realized that I did something about it. Now, I’ve been working with Denise as my nutrition coach for 3 months, and sometimes I look back and wonder how I even survived as a CrossFit athlete without paying attention to what I put into my body. Every day I have a choice….am I going to do everything in my power to get myself closer to my goals…. or am I going to sit back and just hope I can get by? Now it’s not even a second thought which one I’m going to choose each morning, and I’ll tell you... I’ve never felt better, and I’ve never been fitter.
