What is Collagen Protein?



It seems that over the past year collagen protein has become all the rage-the supplement everyone is taking. So; what is it and why take it?


Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies! It's in the connective tissue that makes up our tendons, ligaments, skin and muscles, as well as in the structural components of our bones. It’s everywhere! This protein, which is made by our very own bodies, unfortunately begins to see a decline in production after the age of 30. For women, the production takes another hit once they begin to go through menopause. For this reason-collagen protein is a great supplement to nutrition. Supplementation with collagen has been shown to support joint health and reduce inflammation, as well as support healthy skin, hair and nails, and gut health!


A few things to keep in mind. Collagen is not a complete protein; meaning that it does not serve as an adequate replacement for whey protein, or in place of the protein you’d have with your meal or snack. Additionally-you don’t want to go overboard with this in hopes it will bring you to the fountain of youth-take as directed! Our favorite ways to incorporate collagen into our daily nutrition include:


-adding a scoop to morning coffee

-using in a smoothie recipe

-adding to a scoop to a whey protein shake for post WOD nutrition

-adding to a cup of herbal tea

-mixing into protein pancakes


If you’ve sat down with me to talk nutrition-you know I don’t push a bunch of supplements. This one, however, is something most of us can benefit from and has no draw-backs. Give it a try!
