Life Lessons from CrossFit

It’s no secret that we love CrossFit.  Not only for its ability to get us super fit and healthy, but it delivers some powerful life lessons as well.  Here are my top 6!

 

 

  1.  Show up, on time, with the right gear.

    • OK, so I borrowed this saying from Navy SEAL training.  But it is so true in CrossFit and life as well.  If you show up, you’ve done the hard part.  Getting out of bed, getting off the couch, and committing to going … that is 90% of the battle!  When you show up at CrossFit, you are surrounded by your fellow athletes and led by your Coach.  Its good energy and smiles all around.  Put CrossFit into your calendar and commit to going, no matter how you feel.  You will always feel better after!  Same goes for life, but tends to show up in the form of procrastination.  Commit to your to-do list.  Make that dentist appointment ... and go to it!  

       

  2. Visualize success and be positive

    • A proven tactic by some of the worlds best performers (athletes, military, artists, etc) is to literally visualize yourself succeeding in the task you are about to do.  That 1-Rep max back squat coming up – visualize success!  Chances of you completing it will be much higher.  Combine this with a dose of positivity and you are destined to crush everything!  Take this mindset to your job and watch your performance skyrocket as well.

       

  3. Learn from others ahead of you

    • Mentors.  We could all use more of them.  As kids, we have coaches and teachers everywhere.  But as adults, we seldom utilize this proven method of learning.  Whether you want to improve your fitness or your business, finding somebody that has been there and done that is immensely helpful.  They will help you avoid some of their hard lessons learned and possibly show you a smoother path.  In CrossFit we have Coaches to help with us with squats and nutrition.  In business and life, mentors are out there, seek them out for life gains!  [Even if somebody isn’t a mentor by title, try asking somebody who just does what you want to do, it will flatter them and they will likely help you!]

       

  4. Hard work pays off

    • Those most successful at CrossFit are those that show up regularly 4 to 5 times a week.  They put in the hard work day after day.  Same goes for life.  If you want the promotion, you need to earn it.  Work harder than your peers and your hard work will pay off! #crusheverything

       

  5. Even the hardest tasks are doable

    • Yesterdays wod was Sherwood #3.  Run 3 laps, 20 burpees.  Run 3 laps, 19 burpees.  All the way down to 1 burpee.  On the grand scale, if you do the math beforehand [which I never do] it is a huge task!  6 miles of running and an incredible amount of burpees.  But if you break that big task down into “Just run 1 lap” and “just do 1 more burpee” it all the sudden becomes possible.  Live in the moment.  Don’t get caught up in what lies ahead.  So many people in life quit before they even start because the task SEEMS hard.  They are projecting the difficulties before experiencing them. But if you just take that one step and start running, live in the moment and take it literally one step at a time, IT IS POSSIBLE!  Many members yesterday stated they ran more in that workout than they EVER have before, let alone all the burpees! That is awesome!

       

  6. Mindset is everything

    • Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right. – Henry Ford.  Everybody is capable of CrossFit.  Everybody is capable of success in life.  Hardships and difficulties come and go for all of us, but how we deal with them and how we set our mind control our outcomes.  Be positive and crush everything!

Growing up in Simsbury, I started playing ice hockey soon after I started walking. I continued to play up through high school, as well as playing lacrosse and running cross country at Avon Old Farms. In addition, I also played football, raced mountain bikes, skied (then) and snowboard (now). I also enjoy road biking if I have the free time. If it’s athletic, chances are I like it, and have done it. I was first introduced to CrossFit at BUD/s (Basic Underwater Demolition / SEAL training) in 2008. I continued to use and benefit from CrossFit training during my time as a US Navy SEAL, with tours to Afghanistan, Africa, and Europe. I am very passionate about CrossFit, and whole heartedly believe everybody can benefit from it. CrossFit will not only get you in better shape, but the effects will translate into your personal and professional life as well, such as learning perseverance, commitment, teamwork, integrity, and community.
