The Story We Tell Ourselves

August 10, 2018

Mindset.  The biggest single factor for self-improvement.

Many tell themselves they are not in good enough shape to do CrossFit.  Then they join, see that they can do it, and wish they had done so earlier.

Many tell themselves they cannot afford CrossFit.  But once they allocate their money towards health and wellness, the alcohol budget decreases, the eating out decreases, and all the sudden, they see they can pay for it, and are in fact, happy too.

Many tell themselves that they will never be able to lift that weight or do that unassisted pullup.  Then they keep coming, day after day, and before they know it, they are lifting the weight and doing the pullup.

Many tell themselves they will never be at their high school body weight again.  Then they learn proper nutrition and the pounds fall off.

Many tell themselves they will never be fast because they are big, or they will never be strong because they are small.  Then they work incredibly hard day in and day out, and become fast, or strong, or both!

Does any of this sound familiar?  The list is endless.

New members laugh when they hear me say a challenging workout looks “casual.”  Or perhaps I say, “looks like a good one!”. Is the workout actually casual?  Hell no.  Its incredibly challenging.  But I am telling myself a story, to prepare my mind and body, for the upcoming challenge.  If I think its casual, I relax.  If I relax, I can breathe.  If I can breathe, wallballs all the sudden aren’t so hard.

This is CrossFit.  This is life.  It starts with the mindset of “I can.”  With the combination of a member’s mindset and the Coaches’ help and guidance, anything is possible.

Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right. – Henry Ford

Next time you feel yourself telling a story, pause.  Is it negative or positive?  This philosophy relates to everything in life, not just fitness.

Why can’t you go on that dream vacation?

Why can’t you run that marathon?

Why can’t you open that business?

Why can’t you lose that weight?

The world is ours for the taking.  Make the best of it, tell yourself a positive story, and crush everything.

I’ll leave you with one last point, from Tony Robbins book “Money”.

“The ultimate thing that stops most of us from making significant progress in our lives is not somebody else’s limitations, but rather our own limiting perceptions or beliefs.  I always say that 80% of success in life is psychology and 20% is mechanics.” – Tony Robbins
