* Part 1 of a new series "A Coaches Story". Hear how the Coaches at CFS came to start CrossFit and how it has brought them to where they are today *
Everybody comes to CrossFit for a reason, maybe it is to lose weight or to gain muscle. There are also plenty that believe in the myth that you “need to be in shape before starting CrossFit”, and never join. Since I just hit my 4 year anniversary here at CFS I figured I would use myself as a quick example to set the record straight.
I started CrossFit like most people do, I signed up for the Prep Course and nervously made my way inside for my first class. At that time in my life, health was not a priority. In fact I was probably as far away from healthy as I could be. I smoked cigarettes, drank on a daily basis and hadn’t worked out since high school. I was close to 200 pounds and got winded going up too many flights of stairs. So as you can imagine I was terrified walking in, and I had no idea what to expect. I walked out after my first “WOD” and I felt exhausted, but I had done it. I continued on and finished the prep course, thus beginning my CrossFit journey. The first few months were very difficult. I struggled to meet my own insane expectations, I was constantly humbled by the workouts and at times felt discouraged with my progress. Despite all of that I decided to keep pushing forward. As time went on though I saw amazing changes. I lost weight, gained muscle and dropped numerous bad habits all because I wanted to improve. Even small PR’s and goals meant the world to me, because it was reminding me that I was still getting healthier.
Fast forward 4 years and I am part of an incredible community, a great team of coaches and I get to do something I love on a daily basis. Looking back, I can honestly say joining CFS was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. The point of that story is to let everyone know what CrossFit can do for you, if you are willing to put in the effort. We all start somewhere, some farther along than others, but we all come here to improve ourselves on a regular basis. So if you are concerned that you aren’t moving forward as fast as you wanted, dig in and keep grinding because I can promise you that with enough effort you can reach your goals. Trust the process.
